Last fall I was living in Silverlake, towards the eastside of L.A., and came to this realization that I was living closer to the ocean than i ever had in my life, yet hardly saw it. My girlfriend and I made a point of going up to Malibu and hanging out on the beach, staying at a friends guesthouse, checking out the town, swimming in the ocean. Being from Idaho I was (and still am) mystified by the whole vibe there. A bizarre culture of spoiled celebrity kids, surf bums, tourists, wealthy folks. But i loved it. I sat down on the sand with my notebook and really tried to absord the feeling. 27 years old in Malibu,CA, happily broke, watching my girlfriend surf, pelicans skimming the waves, my white Norwegian skin slowly burning in the hot sun. Wrote 5 or 6 songs throughout those trips.
Working on the new record at my friends studio Echo Park I brought up the idea that I'd wanted to cover a song about Malibu. We dug through some Neil Young and Fleetwood Mac stuff but nothing really grabbed me. He pulled up the song "Malibu" by HOLE and I immediately imagined it in this quiet melancholy way. The lyrics are so great. Slightly dark and really paint the image and feeling. We cut the track in a few takes and ended up really having fun with it.
In the midst of getting my new album finished, Ill be putting out a cover every month of songs from different artists that have inspired me and this new record in some way. Heres the first. Cheers and hope you all enjoy
